The Columnist – July 2026: Currency of Trust: What Holds an Economy Together

Jul 31, 2026 | Consulus Columnist

Your insights & creative thought leadership on commerce, civilisation, creativity, and changemaking organisations.

THOUGHT OF THE MONTH

Every economy runs on things people cannot fully verify but choose to act on anyway. A currency holds its value because enough people agree it will. A brand earns loyalty because people trust it will deliver again. A faith tradition moves capital because communities trust it will be honoured. This month’s stories all point to the same underlying asset: trust, made concrete enough to build on.

Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad’s career across Algeria, Korea, Iran, Costa Rica, and Venezuela shows what that looks like in diplomacy, where interfaith trust often held when formal institutions could not. When he opens the Shape the World Summit 2026 at Lambeth Palace, he arrives at the same moment the Multifaith Economy Index and Mark gives that trust a number: USD 3+ trillion in faith-aligned capital. The same instinct shows up elsewhere this month: Design leaders in Singapore are proving that trust in aesthetic judgment moves markets through the World Design Business Forum. Our Partner Parendigm is demonstrating that trust between employer and employee includes a family’s wellbeing. The Economy of Communion is proving that “profit serves people” can be audited and not just claimed.

Shape The World Summit 2026: Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad as Opening Keynote Speaker and Guest of Honour

We’re delighted to announce that Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, and a diplomat whose postings have taken him from Algeria and Korea to Iran, Costa Rica, and Venezuela, will open the Shape the World Summit 2026 as Keynote Speaker and Guest of Honour on 15 October at the Shape the World Summit in Lambeth Palace.

He takes the stage at a pivotal moment for the Summit, where we launch the Multifaith Economy Index and Mark: a new standard for recognising faith-rooted economic practice, with the ambition of mobilising USD 3+ trillion in faith-aligned capital.

The Summit will take place in Lambeth Palace, London. Attendance is by invitation only, with limited seating.

World Design Business Forum: Leading Design Transitions

Design acts as a direct driver of economic growth, technology integration, and market expansion. On 9 September 2026, the Design Business Chamber Singapore will host the World Design Business Forum under the theme ‘Leading Design Transitions’ at the National Design Centre, Singapore, bringing together global and local industry leaders to examine how design-led strategy impacts business models and market performance.

This day is built around practical insight: how to prove the value of your work, adapt your studio or career to major industry shifts, and build relationships with people doing the real work in design. Morning sessions cover business strategy and market impact; afternoon workshops give you hands-on guidance for your own practice.

NETWORK SPOTLIGHT: Parendigm Brings Family Wellbeing to Singapore’s Boardrooms

Working parents don’t want to choose between showing up for their careers and showing up for their children. Most organisations, however, still treat the two as competing demands rather than a balance worth actively supporting.

Our partner Parendigm, which has guided over 1,000 families and supports brands like OCBC, Singlife, NCS, and Singapore General Hospital, is helping organisations close that gap. Co-founder Eric Lim’s signature 90-minute corporate workshop, “Rethink Parenting in the Modern World,” gives working parents practical strategies to parent with more confidence and less guesswork, which, in turn, builds the engaged, present leadership that every organisation benefits from.
